Short Films – Families & Animals

We are currently seeking permissions to add additional films to this gallery.

This film reflects the coexistence of affection, beauty, and violence and invites us to reconsider the boundaries we draw between “human” and “animal.” Its sudden turn from intimacy to cruelty raises questions about how we might imagine more compassionate ways of living with other species and each other.

Lost Momentum, directed by Scott Sona Snibbe, 1995.

Synopsis: “Constantinople 1910. The streets are overrun with stray dogs. The newly-established government, influenced by a model of Western society, uses European experts to choose a method of eradication before deciding, suddenly and alone, to massively deport the dogs to a deserted island away from the city.”

Director’s Note: “This historical fact is deeply misunderstood in Turkey. The successive authorities did all they could to erase it from popular memory, along with the entire history of the late Ottoman Empire. But, I was struck by the perverse nature of the relationship between the Europeans and the Turks at that time. One hundred years later, I wanted to illustrate the state of mind this episode reveals through the power of a film.”
